Abstract

This chapter reinforces the emphasis throughout the book on nursing homes as social communities of care. Rather than treating residents and staff as isolated individuals, the social nature of gerontology is discussed. While clinical care is necessarily personalised to meet each resident’s specific needs, within a broader framework, partnerships are key, including families, volunteers and a variety of other carers. Families and friends make an essential contribution to the social life of the nursing home; not divorced from the gerontological care pivotal to the residents’ well-being. Gerontology is multidisciplinary, covering a wide range of areas impacting all areas of aged care; its benefits greatly enhancing the lives of residents.

While (some of) the stories are based on factual situations, real names and other details have been altered to protect the identity of the persons concerned. Resemblance to any particular person is therefore purely coincidental.
