Abstract
In this chapter attention is drawn to the rapidly increasing ageing population, with its implications for nursing homes. Issues of personhood, ageism, human rights, ethics and appropriate funding are discussed. Questions are raised as to whether the current system is fit for purpose, trustworthy and ‘homelike’. Nomenclature is shown to be subject to interpretation: is the nursing home a community or a ‘facility’? Welcoming diversity includes cultural awareness: the various needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as those from other cultures, gender-diverse residents and younger people, are acknowledged for their unique needs.
While (some of) the stories are based on factual situations, real names and other details have been altered to protect the identity of the persons concerned. Resemblance to any particular person is therefore purely coincidental.
