Abstract
Oral diseases (such as dental caries or periodontal disease) are highly frequent chronic diseases that may appear early in life. If left untreated, oral diseases resut in functional and psychosocial impacts that accumulate overtime. Those consequences are linked to the evolution of other systemic chronic diseases with which oral diseases share common determinants and risk factors. Impaired oral health is thus an early and visible marker of social health inequalities.
Oral health promotion (OHP) thus requires considering oral health as a component of general health with the development of sustainable and evidence-based interventions that aim to reduce exposure to risk factors common to many chronic diseases while taking into account the social and environmental determinants of health. However, to enable implementation of relevant interventions, oral health inequalities have to be first described and understood within the local context, to highlight social injustices and support stakeholders’ political decisions.
This chapter presents an oral health promotion intervention and research programme conducted in New Caledonia (NC), an archipelago in the south-western Pacific Ocean. While remaining focused on the issue of equity, the aim of this intervention and research programme is the production of knowledge in the field of health promotion (HP) applied to oral health. After describing the context, the different stages for the search of equity that structure the intervention and research programme are described. Indeed, following this process allowed oral health to be recognized as an issue for health promotion in NC, to ensure stakeholder participation, integrate oral health into a general health promotion approach and undergo quality research in oral health promotion.
