Abstract
I assess the rise and partial success of the New Literacy Studies from the 1970s on, and the fact of a resurgent set of literacy myths and a continuing proliferation of “many” and “new” literacies. I identify and briefly discuss in historical and intellectual context major developments and landmark works over a half century.
