Abstract

The surgical microscope offers the periodontist increased illumination and enhanced visualization of small anatomical structures. It allows the surgeon to perform procedures with greater precision than with other methods of magnification.

This chapter provides an overview of magnification in dentistry, reviews the basics of the different instruments of optical magnification currently available. It compares the use of loupes with the operating microscope, describing the history, types of loupes, visual acuity, advantages, and disadvantages of each magnification system. The section describes in detail the parts and components of a surgical microscope: including the body of the microscope, light source, and supporting structures.

The improved visual acuity of microsurgery provides significant advantages for surgeons. These advantages include tremendously increased visibility and lighting, enhanced ergonomics and posture, ease of documentation, and improved precision in the delivery of surgical skills. The use of an operating microscope grants the periodontist the ability to perform minimally invasive procedures more accurately in less time.
