Political Representation and Gender Equality in Mexico

Abstract

Digital sexual violence has become a problem with significant social and economic consequences for women and girls. In Mexico, digital violence was not legally classified; thus, related conduct was not punishable and was not even considered illegal. As of June 6, 2021, thanks to the work of the Frente Nacional para la Sororidad (National Sorority Front) and, in particular, of Olimpia Coral, the so-called “Olimpia Law” reform was enacted. This chapter analyzes the discussion, additions and recommendations in the Congress of the Union, as well as the participation of civil organizations, surrounding the final approval of the Olimpia Law.
