Abstract

In discussing discrimination and discriminatory practices in schools, I want to remind us all of the principles of democracy, equality of opportunity, and social justice for all, as they define human rights and the current nature and directions of discrimination discourses. In the USA, the myth of equality of opportunity and the ‘fading of the American Dream’ was already analyzed by Bowles & Gintis (1976), in their famous book Schooling in Capitalist America. The authors believed in advancing an ‘egalitarian and liberating educational system’ (Bowles & Gintis, 1976, p. 287). Like Bourdieu and Passeron (1977), who argued that cultural, economic and social capital, have contributed to the inequality globally, Bowles & Gintis (1976) suggested that schools continued to reproduce social and economic class inequality. This idea is particularly relevant to the role and significance of class and socio-economic-status (SES) in discourses of discrimination globally.
