Abstract
Hematomas in the neck after thyroidectomy surgery are a rare but potential post-surgical complication. Anesthesiologists responsible for caring for patients in the post-operative period including in the post-anesthesia care unit must be attuned to this dreaded complication. This chapter uses the overarching case of a hematoma post-thyroidectomy to more broadly review the differential diagnoses for respiratory distress post-extubation; common causes of respiratory distress in the post-anesthesia care unit; and discusses the management of an emergency difficult airway in the post-anesthesia care unit.
