Abstract
Adult patients with automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) and pacemaker devices frequently present to hospitals for non-cardiac surgery, including orthopedic surgery and general surgery. It is important for the general anesthesiologist to know how to manage these devices preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively, as there is not always a device representative, a cardiologist, or a cardiac anesthesiologist present to provide immediate consultation. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the anesthetic management of automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD)/pacemaker devices during non-cardiac surgery; and to review the indications for reprogramming an AICD/pacemaker preoperatively.
