Abstract
For more than 40 years, the decrease in contractile function of the heart during acute ischemia/infarction has been demonstrated with two-dimensional echocardiography. Still, it was not until the 1980s that the impact of its use with pharmacological stress became clinically apparent. Stress echocardiography (SE) is an inexpensive and relatively simple procedure with high diagnostic accuracy that may be performed either with exercise (treadmill or bicycle) or pharmacological stress, predominantly dobutamine.
