Pafnuty Chebyshev and the Mathematics Education of His Time

Abstract

This paper focuses on the work of the outstanding Russian mathematician Pafnuty Chebyshev in the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Education of Russia, or more precisely, his reviews and comments on textbooks submitted to the Committee. These reviews were published in full only in 2021. An analysis of them makes it possible not only to learn more about Chebyshev, or more broadly, about what a major mathematician brings to mathematics education, but also to form a more complete picture of Russian mathematics education during the second half of the nineteenth century. One may draw the conclusion that Russian mathematics education was then still in a formative stage (including those aspects of it which pertain to expository language and style of presentation, its standards of accuracy and precision, and so on). P.L. Chebyshev’s influence on this formative process was very substantial.
