Abstract

The most recent data from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrates that within the United States, stroke is the third leading cause of death in women and fifth in men. The data also indicates that 1 in 4 of the strokes in the United States happen in those who have previously had a stroke. Stroke can be divided into two large categories: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke makes up approximately 85% of strokes. This chapter discusses the pathophysiology of each type and current treatment guidelines.
