Abstract
This chapter focuses on the trust relationship between publics and the institution of journalism/news media in western liberal democracies, and the current and potential future role of emerging technologies. The chapter places special focus on artificial intelligence (AI), as an emerging technology, in that trust relationship. It aims to theoretically postulate, in terms of an ideal future scenario for 2030, how AI could potentially enhance and strengthen the trust relationship between publics and news media. This aim will hopefully contribute to the overall objective of contributing a theoretical ideal that can be used as an analytical tool for scholars assessing the role, use and future development of AI in journalistic contexts, especially for scholarly work interested in AI’s impact on public trust.
