Nutrition, Weight, and Digestive Health

Abstract

The foregut is defined as the section of the alimentary canal from the mouth to the start of the small intestine. It is responsible for the transport of food and the start of the digestive process. Dysfunction in this area of the gastrointestinal tract can lead to significant symptomatology including dysphagia, odynophagia, abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea/vomiting. While medical and endoscopic treatments are often available, dietary interventions and nutritional repletions may play an important role in disease and symptom management. The following chapter will review the pathophysiology of some of these disorders and the role diet and nutrition may play in risk stratification and treatment.
