Abstract
The macronutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, and micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals are the basic building blocks of nutrition and diet and have significant health implications when deficient. As such, national and international advisory boards have defined specific dietary intake recommendations for these nutrients in healthy populations. Additionally, specific disease states may predispose persons to deficiencies, warranting close medical attention and follow-up to avoid further health complications. The following is a review of dietary composition in terms of macronutrients and micronutrients as well as a discussion of populations at high risk of deficiency and their associated presentations.
