Abstract

The results from the study “Urban agriculture as a strategy for improving the quality of life of urban communities” support the assertion in the literature that UA can alleviate pressing urban problems. The findings of the book demonstrate that people, motivated by the search for good quality food, physical and emotional well-being, environmental responsibility, social connections or just pleasurable leisure time, can re-think and improve their quality of life, which can also reflect positively on the quality of life of their communities and the livability of the city as a whole. Overall, we presented data to support the claim that UA could be implemented locally to tackle social inequalities, poverty, social cohesion and unemployment, through environmentally friendly and fair use of public space. The research questions we posed at the beginning of the research were if, how and to what extent these positive effects of UA manifest themselves, and how they can be harnessed to the best interest of individuals, the local communities and cities in general so that the quality of life for citizens is improved.
