Abstract

Advances in medical care allow patients with increasing age and medical complexity to have safe, healthy pregnancies. Primary care clinicians can play a key role in supporting the overall health of patients who are or who desire to be pregnant. This chapter presents an approach to primary care for patients before, during, and after pregnancy including preconception counseling, medication and radiographic imaging safety, and management of common chronic illnesses during pregnancy.
