Abstract

Exercise training is an important intervention to improve metabolic health in older adults. The phenotypic adaptations provoked by chronic training are initiated by the metabolic response to an acute bout of exercise; however, how aging affects this initial response is unclear. In this chapter, we discuss the effects of aging on the metabolic response to acute bouts of resistance and endurance exercise and how age-related diseased conditions may further impair this process. Additionally, we describe various lifestyle interventions that improve the metabolic response to exercise.
