Health Professions and Academia

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to help you understand that what makes you competitive for graduate school can also provide you with a foundation for an academic career, whether it be in pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, or other health profession. Academia is one of many paths to take after graduate school. This chapter will review core elements that are useful in becoming a more competitive applicant for graduate school and the fundamental knowledge and skills to succeed in an academic trajectory. Core elements include timeliness in the application process, documenting experiences that align with your career journey, tapping internal and external resources for tailored support and advising, and connecting with role models, mentors, and champions.
