Abstract
The social and spatial effects of the dramatic COVID-19 crisis have affected the peripheral areas of Italian and European cities, where is concentrated a significant segment of fragile populations. From this perspective COVID-19 pandemic has been not the cause, but an accelerator of demographic, socio-economic and physical processes that were already underway in the previous years. The chapter explores the effects of pandemic on Italian peripheries, with particular attention to the growing socio-spatial polarisation. In the last part of the chapter the analysis is focused on Milan peripheries.
