Addressing Transition Preparation in Middle and High Schools

Abstract

A primary purpose of special education and secondary education is to equip students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with the skills, experiences, supports, and linkages they need to transition successfully to life after graduation. Middle and high school programs have a central role in the design and delivery of transition services that prepare students for college, career, and community outcomes. This chapter focuses on the transition principles, planning, practices, personnel, and partnerships that can place students with ASD on a strong pathway toward their flourishing in adulthood. Across these areas, we highlight best practices and emphasize ways that school psychologists can be key players and partners in the delivery of high-quality transition services within their schools and districts.
