Digital Learning Crisis Management Competencies Among Leaders During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Covid-19 was first reported in Wuhan, China and proceeded to spread globally. The unforeseen challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has affected many people and organizations across the world. Due to the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) of today's world, organizations need to be prepared for any circumstances that might occur in the future by learning from the current pandemic. This paper discusses the crisis management competencies present among leaders in organizations during a crisis with awareness of the present pandemic. This article begins by describing the general concept of a crisis to provide a clear picture of what constitutes a crisis. Furthermore, this article also discusses the importance of competencies in crisis management among leaders and the competencies needed by leaders in managing crises. This paper highlights three main skills that leaders must master. These skills include technical skills, especially in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). These human skills relate to how leaders can effectively collaborate with superiors, subordinates and peers to achieve organizational goals and conceptual skills, which concerns the emotional efforts in shaping the meaning of organizational or policy issues, as well as comprehending what a company stands for and where it is or should be heading. In addition, this article also reviews the opportunities and challenges faced by the community in using ICT during the Covid-19 pandemic. The final section of this article discusses models representing a conceptual framework encompassing all aspects of crisis management.
