Abstract

Due to the ageing population worldwide, healthcare services have become increasingly concerned about their capacity to sustain the quality of life among the elderly. With most of the elderly who prefer staying at home, home care nursing service delivery is increasing in demand. However, in the home care nursing service, it is a common problem worldwide that there is an insufficient number of nursing staff for serving the elderly and a lack of systematic approach to schedule the route for nursing staff. The tight schedule assigned to nursing staff may cause poor working performance and result in poor service satisfaction. It is crucial to propose a systematic approach for scheduling home care nursing staff to deliver domestic homecare services to tackle this problem. In this chapter, a domestic homecare service planning system (DHSPS) is designed by integrating a Genetic Algorithm (GA) in domestic care service planning. A case study was conducted in a local domestic homecare service centre to validate the feasibility of the proposed system. The optimal solution is generated by considering the total travelling time and the service requirements of the elderly. The results also balance the workload of the homecare nursing staff and reduce the need for overtime working.
