Abstract
Mental disorders are very prevalent and cause immense suffering and pain to the individuals inflicted and also are a high burden to healthcare and social services. Properly providing treatment to patients suffering from severe mental illness can be daunting and challenging to any healthcare provider, especially emotionally. This challenge is even more prominent in the treatment of patients suffering from personality disorders or substance use disorders. As almost all the entirety of success in CPAP treatment relies on patients’ adherence, if any success would be made with these patients in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment, it is through understanding the possible hinderances to treatment adherence in this population and what could be the necessary steps to overcome these obstacles.
This chapter will review the topic of severe mental illness and especially of personality disorders in the context of the expected contact with the patient regarding OSA diagnosis and treatment. Measures and techniques of better coping with the patient and increase adherence for OSA treatment will be presented.
