Abstract

Intergenerationally persistent health disparities and inequities among minoritized citizens of colonial nations have worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. The SARS-CoV-2 virus opportunistically and severely attacked those with premorbid health and mental health conditions, contributing to disparities of COVID-19 incidence, hospitalizations, and death among people of color. The COVID-19 disease has been found to produce a range of respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms, as well as loss of taste and smell, damage to organs, and immune-related inflammatory responses. The COVID-19 disease also has been linked to significant mental health consequences, such as anxiety and depression, and cognitive symptoms that may range from memory problems and brain fog to psychotic symptoms. Many people also have long-term presentation of symptoms that are poorly understood. Colonial health care systems were ill-prepared for a sustained global health crisis and responded without a unified approach or vision. Health and mental health care providers have experienced significant psychological consequences and burnout as a result of being overworked, under protected and supported, and even abused by the public. The global psychological consequences from COVID-19 present tremendous long-term challenges to psychologists and other health care professionals.
