Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to create a holistic assessment of sustainable cultural routes. Sustainable cultural routes could revitalize tourist destinations and constitute a glaring example of sustainable promotion of the local cultural identity. The current chapter examines whether sustainable cultural heritage could have an impact on the economic, social, environmental, and cultural environment of a semi-rural destination. The proposed research focuses upon a cultural heritage route, called “From the Byzantine Era to the Sovereignty of Venetians in Archanes,” which is set on the traditional village of Archanes in Heraklion, Crete. The findings indicate that there is low return to the local community, despite the uniqueness and attractiveness of the cultural route. The vulnerability of the assets is obvious, mainly due to the ruins in the places of the former temples, churches, and fortresses. This indicates the urgency of devising an appropriate thematic cultural management plan for the organizations that operate. The chapter concludes with managerial recommendations and a discussion of how sustainability, cultural heritage, and a local development of “responsible” tourism can be combined in a rural destination.
