Abstract
This chapter starts with the history as well as definitions of traditional supply chain management (SCM). One of them describes SCM as the coordination and management of complex networks of processes in the supply chain to supply products or services to end-users in the most possible efficient and cost-effective manner (Storey, J., et al., International Journal of Operations & Production Management 26:754–774, 2006). Furthermore on, the main activities of SCM as well as the benefits for the companies are outlined. The second part of the chapter focuses on the application of traditional SCM in the automotive industry, whose processes, supplier networks as well as production locations have become more and more complex and numerous. This creates a high demand for an implementation of an effective and efficient supply chain management.
