How Much Energy Does it Take to Make a Videogame

Abstract

This chapter presents the findings of the first ever survey of videogame developer’s energy use and carbon emissions. It reports on energy intensity for developers ranging from individual up to 100–200+ employee studios. Combining this data with usage and emissions disclosures from corporate sustainability reports for some of the largest game development studios and publishers in the world (Ubisoft, Rovio, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft) allows for the first estimate of the carbon footprint of the entire games industry, showing potentially greater energy intensity than the global film industry, adding substantial evidence for the urgent need to decarbonize the digital games industry.
