Abstract
This chapter looks at Australian migration since the 1980s and examines the interplay between institutional determinants of migrant choice (changing political environment and visa conditions, a restructured economy, a challenging private housing market) and the specific housing outcomes in the form of housing tenure. In recent decades, the composition of migration has changed both in terms of region of origin and in the type of visas permitting entry. The chapter finds that, even controlling for equivalent length of arrival, there are very different tenure outcomes for migrants from different regions, which reflect a combination of predominant visa types, household composition, cultural dimensions, preference for location, and of course, the socio-economic push factors in the country of origin.
