Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a set of perspectives for understanding urban transitions through the lens of migration trends in Australia in the twenty-first century. We begin with a review of the research on migration and Australian cities published over the past 20 years. These two decades have seen a marked increase in international migration and a rapid growth in the major capital cities. We then engage with an overview of the key drivers of urban transitions in relation to immigration, including demographic trends, environmental sustainability, and spatial and socio-cultural changes. Each of these transitions offers a range of challenges for the future of Australian cities in relation to migration and socio-cultural diversity. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion of the challenges and opportunities of the urban transitions framework.
