Abstract

Breast cancer has to be treated in specialist Breast Centres. Eusoma has defined the requirements for such centres, in terms of volume, organisation, dedicated team, services and equipment, patient pathway from diagnosis to follow-up including advanced disease, palliative care and end of live, research, education, data collection and quality control. Multidisciplinary approach is essential to offer to patients an integrated care. Voluntary certification is an important tool to monitor quality of care and in taking commitment to improve the Breast Centre performance for the benefit of women.

Different national certification and accreditation programmes are available. Based on Eusoma requirements, a European accredited certification scheme has been developed.

Still, more steps forwards need to be made, to ensure that breast cancer patients have equitable access to Breast Centres in Europe regardless the country where they live.
