Delivering Compassionate Care

Abstract

As healthcare professionals, the possibility of medical errors, internal biases, and other mental shortcuts in our work is high. The following chapter discusses mindful compassion in the context of these workplace challenges, both in how to mitigate them and how to handle them when they occur. The module includes application of mindfulness qualities to common errors made in the healthcare setting, group activity, and discussion, as well as an introduction to a “sending and receiving” meditation, called tonglen. We conclude with a practice of yoga nidra, or deep rest, with a focus on holding space for opposites.
