Abstract
In recent years, technological and methodological advancements in brain imaging techniques, such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy, hyper-scanning, and wireless data collection, have allowed design researchers to examine the neurocognitive processes of designers during specific design activities in more natural environments. Based on these new opportunities, we present a systematic literature review examining the current state of neurocognitive research in the design field. An initial literature review examines the current state of research on creativity, decision making, and empathy in design. A secondary literature review includes neurocognitive research on design activities. Combined analysis of these reviews reveals that neurocognitive research has moved away from examining specific cognitive tasks to focus on investigating cognition during specific design activities. The findings of this literature review are compared to those of similar recently published literature reviews to provide an overview present a discussion on future directions of the intersection of neuroscience and design science.
