Abstract

The deep subseafloor is a vast yet almost underexplored habitat for life on Earth featuring large-scale global flows of water, heat, and dissolved chemical compounds. Finding out where and how life exists in this large and fragmented ecosystem is crucial because the chemical reactions that occur in this environment have implications for the broader ocean system. In the past decades a number of major oceanographic expeditions have been devoted to characterizing the deep-sea crustal and sediment microbiomes, which has become possible because of the advances in deep-sea drilling and observation technologies. Culture- and more importantly non-culture approaches that are based on the assembly of genomes from massive metagenomic data, have shed light on several unknown phyla that have no cultured representatives with metabolic characteristics that show adaptations to the extreme physicochemical conditions of deep-sea subsurface environments.
