Abstract

The oblique or sash-like pattern has been described in three different disorders, Ruggieri-Happle syndrome, multiple basaloid follicular hamartoma, and piebaldism. So far, it is unclear whether the unusual arrangement can be categorized as “segmental” or not. In the Pallister-Killian syndrome, the asymmetric arrangement of achromic lesions does not appear to be entirely compatible with Blaschko’s lines, although the distribution is often reminiscent of “atypical” Blaschko lines. Children with macrocephaly-reticular capillary nevus syndrome (“macrocephaly-capillary malformation syndrome”) often show a peculiar port-wine stain being localized in the median area of the face. It is possible, but so far unproven, that this unusual “midfacial pattern” reflects mosaicism.

The list of well-established mosaic patterns as noted in human skin will probably increase in the years to come.
