Building Renovation

Abstract

The urgency of climate change and all the problems related to the excessive use of energy force a reorganisation of the process which is interested in the reuse of the existing building stock. Building refurbishment and adaptive reuse are often confusing terms, but in reality they point to approaches that focus on different objectives. The need to systematise decisions and evaluate options at different levels of intervention highlights the importance of codifying processes and adopting effective decision models. Different environmental, economic and social sustainability challenges need to be taken into account along with how building refurbishment could provide a solution.
