The History of Maxillofacial Surgery

Abstract

Despite technological and scientific advances, orofacial clefts (OFCs) continue to affect a considerable number of children around the world. Our understanding and treatment of OFCs have changed dramatically over the centuries thanks to the historic work of many scientists, physicians, and surgeons. It is important to understand this history and the progression of treatments and surgical techniques so that we can continue to advance our care of cleft patients. This review serves to highlight our current understanding of OFC embryology and anatomy, historical recounts of cleft care around the world, the evolution of surgical techniques, and the many contributions of important figures throughout the years.
