Abstract

I remember witnessing a curious trawl-fishing incident from the Polarstern in 2003, just before Christmas. It was late and we had already collected the samples, and we were observing some at random to check whether or not there were organisms in the sediment that might be of interest. Together with starfish, corals or sponges, quantities of mud are often collected and, in this area, we kept overtaking and being passed again by a group of scientists that wanted to emulate the passage of an iceberg by dragging a reinforced and very destructive net along the bottom, over and over again.
