Abstract
Stem cell donation is recognized as a curative treatment option of leukaemia. For this purpose new donors are needed. For raising their awareness, the teaching unit (“Wake up”) has been developed and conducted with students of the upper secondary level. The goal of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the intention for stem cell donation based on an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Within the TPB framework the factors attitudes, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control are measured directly as well as indirectly via beliefs. In addition, the model external factors content knowledge, moral obligation, moral reasoning and empathy are investigated. The research question is about the extent to which “Wake up” influences the measured constructs. In the pre-post design, 263 students (ageØ: 16.78) participated in a questionnaire survey. The results show that after intervention there are significant increases in intention for stem cell donation, in belief-based negative attitudes, in control beliefs as well as in all global constructs of TPB and in content knowledge, moral obligation and in moral reasoning. The teaching unit based on the extended TPB model has been effective in raising the awareness of this important health issue.
