Abstract
Perioperative cardiovascular risk assessment helps to risk stratify a patient prior to an operative procedure. The patient’s comorbidities and functional status, combined with the inherent risk of the procedure, must be considered. There are many available tools to help calculate a patient’s risk of a perioperative major adverse cardiac event, each of which has strengths and limitations. Performing a risk assessment may lead to further testing after surgery, but oftentimes no further testing is needed prior to surgery. Special scenarios to consider include patients with drug-eluting stents, patients on anticoagulation, and patients with severe valvular disease.
