Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. It can be precipitated by multiple physiologic stressors and electrolyte abnormalities in patient with both structurally normal and abnormal hearts and can result in patient discomfort, hemodynamic instability, heart failure, and thromboembolism. Prevention of stroke with risk-based application of systemic anticoagulation is the most important treatment goal, and numerous pharmacologic and procedure-based therapies are available for the control of ventricular rate and atrial rhythm.
