Abstract

The chapter attempts to assess the role of radio technology in the formation of the Soviet state during its first decades. It is commonly accepted that radio played the dominant role in the media politics of Leninism and Stalinism. However, the analysis of early publications in Soviet radio magazines allows for questioning this view. The statistics on the actual coverage of different regions, availability of radio receivers, audibility, and sound reception allows for a far more nuanced view of radio importance than has been generally assumed before.
