Transformation of Local Journalism: Media Landscapes and Proximity to the Public in Spain, France and Portugal

  • Chapter

Total Journalism

Abstract

This chapter deals with the transformation of local media in the European context, focusing the study on the digital scenario in Spain, France and Portugal. The respective media maps are used to determine the current weight of regional, local and hyperlocal digital media. Based on the characteristics of the media ecosystem in each country, we seek to identify common trends and specific characteristics of the global mutations in journalism in these countries. Special attention is paid to the way in which the media seek to (re)create proximity with their audiences through their editorial models, the forms and channels they establish for interaction with the public or the creation of collaborative relationships.

Notes

  1. 1.

The collaborative inventory was coordinated by Ouest MédiaLab for the Festival de l'Info Locale. As explained on their webpage, the authors understood a local news outlet as "any news outlet that deals with the current events of an area ranging from the neighborhood up to the region. [The authors have] done so without setting limits in terms of nature of publication (online, radio, television, print) nor of economic models (free of charge or with a fee, nonprofit, private or public), nor of the quality of the published contents. The basic unit of this inventory is the editorial staff. That is to say, a team of journalists broadcasting information collected by them (for the most part) on the territory surrounding their place of work".

  2. 2.

The inventory is accessible at https://www.festival-infolocale.fr/medias-locaux-aidez-nous-a-vous-compter/.

  3. 3.

In Portugal, the most common concept is proximity journalism (jornalismo de proximidade). However, considering the most frequent use in international studies and in English, we will consider 'local journalism'.

  4. 4.

The pioneer of online journalism in Portugal was the daily newspaper Jornal de Notícias, which started its online edition on July 26, 1995 [7].
