Abstract
This chapter is the first of two focused on gender and punishment. It analyses punishment as a form of gendered social control, addressing imprisonment and community penalties. The chapter discusses women’s and men’s imprisonment, as well as prison as an institution which produces and reproduces the gender binary, with implications for trans and non-binary prisoners.
