Abstract

The significance of common factors for the success of the therapeutic relationship and process remains generally unacknowledged, which has, in turn, led to a number of missed opportunities.

The therapeutic relationship, which is steeped in conscious appreciation and provides an adequate, life-enhancing new experience regardless of the method used, lies at the heart of efficacy.

The quality of the relationship, which was previously regarded as a “common factor” in the field, correlates with therapy success more than any other factor (30%). However, said quality is vastly different across the various schools, which is most likely the reason for the high level of efficacy exhibited by Gestalt therapy.

The therapist’s personality is responsible for 20% of the variance in the outcome, whereas disorder-specific methods only contributed 10 (−15%) to the variance in outcome. Proponents of these methods falsely tend to record their successes in previous research as method-specific. As such, certain methods could also be renounced. They may be abundant, but should only be used with sound judgement.
