Abstract
Psychotherapy unites the intellectual traditions of the natural and human sciences. It also reflects the current upheaval within the natural sciences.
Over the past two to three centuries, the notions and evaluation of objectivity and subjectivity have undergone significant transformations, a fact that has been reflected in the various schools of psychotherapy. Subsequent reflections on these shifts can help to build bridges.
Difficulties in understanding often arise when it comes to the equivalence of “field and structure”, “wave and corpuscular theory” and subsequently Einstein’s equation “E = mc2”, which touches on the equivalence of matter to spirit: two sides of the same coin. This is further linked to the “digital” and “analogue” use of our brain. It may perhaps surprise the reader to learn that this aspect is relevant to psychotherapy.
With regard to research, this book is geared towards the interdisciplinary spirit and international standard, as has been firmly established for half a century in Bergin & Garfield’s Handbook (Lambert ed./ 6 ed., NY).
