Abstract
A general definition of a design might be “a pattern or template from which to create a working model of something”. We might first think of the word ‘design’ to relate to the process of development, possibly iterative, leading to a set of rules or procedures which one followed, resulting in the creation of something; something which is actually fit for purpose (i.e., it works, and presumably works well!)

Reproduced by kind permission of John Wiley and Sons Ltd.
- 2.
The terms ‘endpoint’ and ‘outcome’ are often taken to be synonymous, but here I use the term endpoint as a composite of outcome and the time at which that outcome is measured.
- 3.
Note that the GPRD has since been renamed as the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD).
- 4.
The word ‘regression’ will be explained much later, but for now be aware that regression methods constitute a huge part of the overall set of statistical modelling methods available to researchers.
