Part of the book series: Studies in Iranian Politics ((STIRPO))

Abstract

This chapter investigates the ideological transformation of the Iranian elite, examining their diverse interpretations of the post-revolutionary system, domestic power relations, economic policy, and foreign politics. It discusses the changes that have occurred within the Islamic left since the early 1990s and the ideological and political foundations of the reformist movement. The analysis traces the emergence of a new political discourse as a result of social demands and economic needs, but also as the outcome of acrimonious factional competition. Moreover, it provides an overview of Khatami’s presidency, which witnessed a deepening in the concept of eslāh (reform), and introduces the rise of a new political force that adopted a revivalist rhetoric while charging it with a new political significance.
