  2. 2.

The reference plane containing both the line-of-sight to the source and the local solar vertical corresponds to the radial direction on the solar disk. A radial [transverse] orientation of the polarization vector therefore corresponds to a preponderance of emission parallel to [perpendicular to] this reference plane. The orientation of the polarization vector thus provides [24] information on the anisotropy of the electron distribution with respect to the solar vertical, corresponding roughly to the direction of the guiding magnetic field.

  3. 3.

The symbol X denotes the type of magnetic field geometry commonly associated with the magnetic reconnection region.
