Abstract
Knowledge of the paranasal sinus (PNS) development, anatomy, and volume are essential to cope with pathologies of this region. Computed tomography (CT) targeting bone anatomy is here the fundamental examination mainly before endoscopic surgeries. The knowledge of the nasal cavity and PNS volume and their development is important because of the large individual variability of their pneumatization level and the real size of the skull. Apparently, there is need for a simple and user-friendly volumetry tool that can be used in connection with the most common radiological computing programs. FOTOM is a volumetric software that can be easily used to measure PNS volumes even by non-medical professionals. This work demonstrates how it can be used to count the volume of sinuses on ten high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) head scans randomly selected from a hospital radiologic database. It is shown that the results obtained by FOTOM are comparable to other volumetric tools. However, its free availability makes it easily accessible and applicable in healthcare facilities all over the world. This is in stringent contrast to other systems that are expensive and often tied to a specific platform. It can help medical practitioners in obtaining and interpreting large amounts of data and establish new norms of PNS volumes.
